LUONNE Manx on luonteeltaan ystävällinen, sosiaalinen, reipas ja leikkisä olematta riesaksi asti. Se tulee hyvin toimeen toisten kissojen, koirien ja lasten kanssa. Kun vieraita tulee, ovat manximme yleensä ovella ensimäisenä vastaanottamassa. Joskus on tuntunut, että pennunkatsojien tullessa myös "isot" luulevat olevansa myynnissä ja esittelevät itseään minkä ehtivät : ) Monet manxit pitävät veden kanssa läträämisestä, valuvat hanat ja kotiväen suihkukäynnit ovat mieluista leikkiä. Paremman puutteessa korvikkeena käyvät vesilasit tai oma vesikuppi, josssa voi myös istua.. Tämä ei tarkoita, että manx pitäisi pesemisestä, (paitsi silloin kun tekee sen itse) mutta sopeutuvaisena oppii kyllä tarvittaessa senkin. Jotkut manxeistani istuvat tyytyväisenä kanssani suihkussa, jos vain sallin : D Lelujen noutaminen uudelleen heitettäväksi on meillä hauskinta leikkiä ja kun leikki loppuu, useat vievät "saaliin" piiloon odottelemaan seuraavaa leikkihetkeä. Se saatetaan tunkea vaikkapa sohvatyynyjen alle. Ja sitten tullaan syliin nukkumaan.. Jotkut ovat "jutustelijoita", eivät äänekkäitä, mutta kertovat asiansa sanomalla miu tai prrrhhh. Ja useat kehräävät tosi lujaa! Luonteen "huono puoli" on sen rakastettavuus - kun hankit yhden, haluat pian toisen.. Monella onkin yhden manxin sijaan useita..
ULKONÄKÖ Manxin yleisilme on pyöreä. Takajalat ovat korkeat ja vahvat, vartalo lyhyehkö ja tanakka, rintakehä on leveä ja takamus pyöreä. Pää on pyöreä, korvat melko korkealle sijoittuneet ja keskikokoiset. Silmät ovat suuret ja pyöreät, ilmeikkäät. Manxin turkki on lyhytkarvaisella lyhyt ja tiheä, kaksinkertainen ja hyvälaatuinen. Pitkäkarvaisen manxin ("Cymric") turkki on keskipitkä ja kaksinkertainen, pehmeä ja silkkinen, silti tuuhea. Manxit tunnetaan siitä mitä niillä ei ole - häntä puuttuu. Se voi syntyä myös hännällisenä, ja kaikkea siltä väliltä. "Hännänmittoja" ovat rumpy (täysin hännätön), rumpy-riser (pieni "kohouma" hännän paikalla), stumpy (töpöhäntä), longy (normaalia lyhyempi häntä) ja normaalipituinen häntä.
TERVEYS Manx on lihaksikas ja jäntevä kissa. Hännän puuttuminen ei mitenkään haittaa kissan liikkumista - päinvastoin. Se hyppää kevyesti lattiatasolta katonrajaan, kirjaimellisesti. Se on myös erittäin nopea : ) Jokaisella kissarodulla, myös maatiaiskissoilla on omat perinnölliset ongelmansa, niin myös Manxeilla. Joskus luonto erehtyy, ja hännän puuttuminen voi aiheuttaa myös ongelmia. Onneksi ongelmat ovat harvinaisia ja havaitaan nopeasti jo aikaisessa vaiheessa. Rekisteröidyn manxin hankkiminen vastuulliselta kasvattajalta on tae kissan terveydestä. Manx on perusterve kissa, joka elää vanhaksi säilyttäen leikkisyytensä vanhempanakin : ) Manxeilla on käynnissä parhaillaan kansainvälinen terveystutkimus Kitten Health Project (Dr. Susan Little, DVM) , jonka tarkoituksena on manx-pentueiden terveyden kartoitus . Samaa tutkimusta on jo tehty muillakin roduilla. Lisäksi tehdään DNA-tutkimusta (Dr. Leslie Lyons), jolla yritetään löytää manxien hännättömyyden aiheuttava geeni ja sen mutaatio. Linkkejä:
Manx is a friendly, social, alert and playful, still not being a nuisance. It likes to be with other cats, dogs and children. When visitors come, our Manx are usually the first one's at the door to say welcome. We have sometimes felt, that when kittenbuyers come the "big one's" also think that they are for sale and presenting themselves as much as possible : ) Many manx like to play with water, running water tap or folks showering is a favourite play. As a substitute goes also a glass of water or it´s own water bucket where some also sit.. This doesn´t mean that manx like to be washed (unless they do it themselves), but they adapt nicely to new things and will cope that too, if needed. Some of our manx sits happily in the shower with me if I let them : D Fetching toys to be tossed again is the most fun. When the playing stops, some will "hide" their treasure to wait the next play time. They may stuff their catch f.e. under the couch pillows. And then to sleep in owners lap.. Manx can also be "a little talker", not noicy, but sharing their thoughts, saying "miauw" or "prrrhhh". Most of them purr a lot, and some vvvvery loudly! The "bad part" in their character is that they´re the most lovable things - when you get one, you want more.. Many people seem to have many instead of one..
Manx overall appearance is roundness. Back feet are high and strong, body is short and cobby, chest is wide and bottom is round. Head is round, ears set fairly high and medium size. Eyes are big and round, expressive. Coat in shorthair manx is double, short and thick, and with good quality. Longhair manx ("Cymric") has a double, medium lenght coat, soft and silky, yet full. The "tail lenghts" are rumpy (absolute absence of tail), rumpy-riser (small "rise" instead of tail), stumpy (stubby, no longer than 3 cm:s), longy (shorter than "normal" tail) and tailed (full tail).
HEALTH Manx is a well muscled and athletic cat. Absence of tail doesn´t bother it's moving at all - quite opposite. It jumps easily from floor to the hight of ceiling, litterally. It is also very fast. In every breed, also domestic cats are some hereditary problems, so is with Manx. Sometimes nature makes a mistake, and the lack of tail can also cause problems. Luckyly, these are rare and problems discovered quickly in an early stage. Getting a registered manx from a responsible breeder, is getting a healthy cat. Manx is overall a very healthy cat, who lives long and maintains it's playful character as on "oldie", too : ) Manx are being part of an internationl health research project at the moment Kitten Health Project (Dr. Susan Little, DVM), purpose is to study manx-kittens health. Some other breeds have already had their studies. Also a DNA-research is going on now (Dr. Leslie Lyons), which is trying to find the gene causing manx taillesness and it's mutation. Links:
